An interesting thing happened this afternoon as I was reviewing where my business came from in 2007. I discovered more of it was derived from participation than solicitation.
Volunteer: I became involved with a local children's charity in March of 2007. As a direct result of participating in fund-raising and community events I can trace one listing appointment, one first quarter 2008 buyer and another possible listing mid-2008 to members of the organization. What could be better than a warm lead from someone who shares a common interest?
Do Your Civic Duty: I reluctantly reported for jury duty last September hoping I would not be selected to serve on a jury. You guessed it, I served on a trial for three days. It is a small world after all! One of my fellow jurors remembered me from an open house in 1995. He's a developer and we traded business cards and have emailed each other a couple of times. He's in my database as an active buyer. Another juror lives a few blocks from me and is upgrading her home. I was able to provide her with contractors who work in the area. She's not ready to sell ...yet.
Get Some Exercise: It will help with the stress of a slow market and you never know who you will meet. I combine my hobby of collecting sea glass with long walks to and on the beach. A few weeks ago I met a new Palos Verdes resident from San Diego while walking on the beach and looking for sea glass amid the rocks. He wants to buy a house in Rancho Palos Verdes in 2008 and his lease is up in June. He and his wife now receive notification of new listings from me via auto emails.
You do not have to be in a real estate setting to build your business. Sure, a large portion of business still comes from referrals, marketing, open house and other traditional venues. However, Sellers and Buyers are people and they are everywhere. Get involved, get fit, and participate in whatever you are passionate about and the business will come while you are building a better you.
