Last Sunday night an earthquake struck the South Bay area of Los Angeles. I was stretched out on the sofa and mindlessly engrossed in some horrific murder plot on Dateline or similar show (I said it was mindless engagement). Moments before, I tossed a load of clothes in the dryer, grabbed a bottle of water and made myself comfortable.
Suddenly a roar rose up from all around me. At first I thought it was the dryer, but the sudden jolt alerted me this was not going to require the Maytag repairman, this was Mother Earth releasing a little geological tension. After the initial attention grabbing roar and jolt, she shook us back and forth for about 15 seconds (believe me, it seemed longer) then stopped as suddenly as she started.
Earthquakes sound no alarms. You can track a hurricane and chase tornadoes, but earthquakes come when they come. There was an aftershock (barely felt that one) and life went on as usual in Southern California. Another reason to love living in Palos Verdes is the solid bedrock our homes are built upon.
Tuesday afternoon I was writing a blog when I noticed my monitor trembling, then I felt the desk and my swivel chair begin to vibrate. I kept blogging--didn't want to lose my train of thought. Yes, it was another quake. I briefly pondered crawling beneath my desk--it's an antique made of hardwood--the perfect place to ride out an office earthquake--unless you're in the middle of writing a post for your blog!
