Recently one of my listings was purchased by a young Asian couple. While still in escrow they were eager for relatives to see their new home, and their agent asked me to arrange a special showing for the buyer's mother. The mother was in Los Angeles from Asia for a few days so the showing was quickly coordinated.
I rescheduled an appointment and the sellers agreed to take the dogs for a ride/walk (again), and persuaded their teenagers to make their beds for another showing even though the house was sold. A simple showing requires quite an orchestration when kids and pets are involved.
On showing day I woke up with a sore throat and a nasty cough (no fever), but gave no thought to re-scheduling the tightly coordinated showing event. I went anyway. When the buyers arrived with mom, she stepped inside, removed her shoes and bowed to her child's agent, then to me. She repeated the bows as we smiled and greeted her. I instinctively combined my welcome to her with a small bow. No handshakes were exchanged.
After touring the home and admiring the view the bowing ritual was repeated in appreciation and farewell. As I locked up the house ( and coughed into my sleeve) I thought in these times of pandemic flu outbreaks bowing might be a less intrusive way of greeting our clients, customers and new prospects. I liked the sincerity, respect and appreciation bowing conveyed.
I think I'm going to incorporate a little more East into my Western ways. How important is the handshaking ritual to you?
