I often think, no one could create fiction that even comes close to the real life drama and comedy taking place in real estate offices and during the buying and selling process. Sometimes it helps me choose my reaction (and we do choose how to respond) with more care, thoughtfulness and precision if I imagine cameras are rolling and millions of would-be buyers and sellers will be watching the latest episode of Norma Toering's Adventures in Real Estate.
Yesterday's 30 minute segment would have to include a confessional with a 70 something year old seller, who has not moved in over 30 years, changing his long-held position that real estate agent are overpaid for doing next to nothing other than escorting consumers through properties, writing an offer and collecting a check. The accusatory"You guys" was dropped in favor of the revelatory, "I had no idea real estate agents work so hard." He's exhausted after a week of negotiating a contract filled with stalemates, late night meetings and lost sleep.
I think the I Love Lucy moment of two agents, two sellers on separate coasts, and foreign buyers trying to coordinate movers, furniture delivery, delayed repairs, painters plus the arrival of foreign funds and family puts a new twist on "smooth closing."
Today I'll try to "hit my mark" on the first take when I unlock my office door and enter the highly charged and equally stimulating world of selling and buying real estate. There is no script, no lines to learn, just plenty of action. I'm always ready to let the camera roll and the day unfold.
