I'm mesmerized by the National Parks series currently running on PBS. Some of my most memorable moments as an American in America took place in our great parks. Although I've visited many of these national treasures, there are still many more trips and experiences waiting for me in this expansive country I call home.
I've pontooned through the Everglades, watched the marshland birds skim along the surface of the never-ending swamp, and held a freshly hatched baby alligator. Old Faithful did not disappoint me on my visit to Yellowstone. I won't soon forget the majestic Grand Tetons towering overhead as I breakfasted on thick bacon and scrambled eggs cooked over an open fire, and sipped Cowboy Coffee so strong it barely required a cup. My senses were filled that morning with sights, smells and sounds I still carry with me. Ahh, and what can I say about the Grand Canyon, other than it redefines the definition of grand.
The homes we live in also leave a powerful imprint on the lives we live. They house the treasures we collect as we pass along the way. They are the storehouse of the times of our life. They shelter us, loved ones and invited guests from the elements and offer a momentary escape from the worries and troubles of the world. Home can be a small studio or an expansive estate; its importance cannot be measured by size.
Home is so much more than four walls. Home is a community, a city and a country. Home is the places you treasure, the experiences that mold you and your place of origin. It is the planet we inhabit and yes, even the parks we visit.
