In my rookie days a seasoned broker told me, "Real estate is a numbers game. Throw enough stuff at the wall and some of it will stick."
Sorry, my beloved first broker, but that approached sounded way too haphazard for me. I needed a plan and had no intentions of flying by the seat of my pants in my new profession. Seventeen years later I have to lift my eyes heavenward to acknowledge the wisdom of his words. Numbers are important, but how you play the numbers does determine your success in the game of real estate and life.
Knowing what numbers to play determines whether you will experience cheers or tears. Would I rather have one $5,000,000 buyer or five $1,000,000 buyers? I'll take the five buyers because the numbers favor making multiple sales, rather than placing all my eggs in one basket, and placing my income at the mercy of one buyer's decision to purchase big, or not at all.
I'm thinking about the importance of numbers because my AR point total passed 200,000 today. I've decided that is not my most important number on Active Rain. I'm rather fond of my profile view total-thousands of viewers have chosen to go beyond the blog and learn about the blogger; I'm thrilled with the number of contacts I've received from my blogging efforts; I'm over the moon about the caliber of client blogging generates and I'm wild about the nationwide networking AR provides. I love the comments and the communication they encourage.
Right or wrong, our success is measured with numbers----how much we make, how many houses we sell, plus our industry rewards us for being in the top 10, the top 1%, top salesperson of the month etc. keeping the numbers game in play. I've often thought it would be lovely to see top service/kindness awards given and sought after with as much zeal.
We track not only our progress but also our lives with numbers. We know our important numbers, both professional and personal. There is no way around the numbers game, so we might as well play it our way, and play it well.
