Since the comment function seems to be disabled this morning, I'll post my response to Elizabeth Weintraub's question as a blog post instead of a comment.
I believe random Americans on the street would have made better decisions than our elected officials, or at least just as good, which is not very good at all! Here's my copy and paste comment:
First, I think the bank executives should have to relinquish any gain (assets, bonuses, homes in the Hamptons etc.) they made during the years they were making sub-prime loans. Secondly, I think the government (we) should take majority ownership of any bank or other business requiring billion dollar handouts. Their choice should be fail, or give up ownership and control.
Beggars can't be choosers.
